Refugio Laguna Grande de Gredos, Mountain shelter in Circo de Gredos, Spain.
Refugio Laguna Grande de Gredos is a mountain shelter built at 1950 meters (6400 ft) above sea level in a high valley surrounded by rocky peaks and mountain lakes. The facility provides sleeping quarters, meal service, and basic amenities for hikers exploring the area.
The shelter was built in 1972 by the Spanish Mountaineering Federation to create organized lodging in the Sierra de Gredos. This facility marked the start of modern infrastructure for mountain expeditions in this remote region.
The refuge connects hikers to the traditional mountain paths used by local shepherds who have traversed these slopes for generations with their Gredos mountain goats.
The shelter is reached by hiking trails that take several hours from the nearest road, so plan adequate time for the journey. Weather conditions and seasonal snow can affect access, so check current conditions before setting out.
The shelter serves as the main jumping-off point for hikers aiming to reach Almanzor, the highest summit of the Sistema Central at 2592 meters (8503 ft). Many climbers spend the night here before attempting the peak at dawn.
