Castelo de Araúxo

Castelo de Araúxo is a medieval stone ruin situated at about 536 meters elevation in the border region between Galicia and Portugal. The remains show the structural foundations of a fortified residence overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built during the medieval period to defend a strategically important border location. The Araújo family established their seat here and exercised power over the surrounding regions from this position.

This site was the ancestral home of the Araújo family, whose name remains familiar in the region today. The ruins stand as a reminder of their noble lineage and the connections they maintained across both Spanish and Portuguese territories.

The site is reachable via marked paths from the nearest town, and sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is uneven. You can visit anytime, but trail conditions vary depending on the season and recent weather.

The ruins sit where two rivers converge, which made this a key control point between kingdoms. This geographical advantage explains why the family chose this specific location to build their fortress.
