Mosteiro de Santa Maria das Júnias

Mosteiro de Santa Maria das Júnias is a monastery ruin featuring Romanesque architecture set in an isolated valley near the Galician border. The church preserves elements from different construction periods, including Gothic windows in the apse and an original kitchen area with a surviving chimney structure.

The site began as a pre-Romanesque hermitage in the 9th century before undergoing significant religious reorganization. In the 13th century, the community joined the Cistercian Order and came under the authority of Oseira Abbey.

The monastery church serves as a pilgrimage destination, particularly on August 15, when people from nearby villages gather to participate in religious observances together. The sacred space continues to hold meaning for the local community and surrounding regions.

Reaching the monastery requires descending approximately 200 meters (650 feet) into a remote gorge, so some physical preparation is advisable. Its location in an isolated mountain valley means visitors should allow ample time and expect limited facilities in the area.

A bishop who participated in Lisbon's capture from the Moors in 1147 received his ordination within these monastery walls. This connection between a sacred place and a major military event adds unexpected historical dimensions to the site.
