Albufera of Valencia, Natural freshwater lake in Valencia, Spain

The Albufera is a shallow brackish lagoon along the Mediterranean coast where freshwater and saltwater mix through a network of canals. It is surrounded by rice paddies, traditional fishing villages, and wetlands filled with reeds and vegetation.

The lagoon formed thousands of years ago from an ancient marine bay that gradually filled with sediment over time. Archaeological discoveries confirm that early human communities settled along its shores and developed ways to live with and use its waters.

The wetlands surrounding this lake shaped the origins of paella, a rice dish born from the local landscape and cooking traditions. Fishing communities and rice farmers continue practices that have defined the area's identity for generations.

The lagoon is best explored on foot or by bicycle along the pathways that ring its edges and connect different sections. Several bus routes serve the area from Valencia city, making it easy to reach different viewpoints and village entrances.

Several small islands rise from the water, creating habitats for birds and wildlife that make the lagoon a vital ecosystem. These scattered land patches play an important role in the natural balance of the area.
