Iglesia de San Lázaro, 19th-century Catholic church in O Peliquín district, Ourense, Spain
Iglesia de San Lázaro is a 19th-century church building located in the O Peliquín district, featuring a Latin cross floor plan with semicircular arches. The structure is reinforced by strong buttresses that support its stone walls and give the building its solid appearance.
An original chapel dedicated to Saint Lazarus was founded in 1119 and initially served as a leprosarium in the area. The structure was completely relocated and reconstructed in the O Peliquín district during 1952.
The church serves as a focal point for neighborhood life and local traditions in the district. On Sundays and holidays, residents gather here for services and community events that shape the rhythm of daily life in the area.
The church is located near a small square with a playground, making it easy to find and access from the neighborhood. This setting allows visitors to walk around the area and experience it as a local gathering space.
During the 1952 relocation, each stone was numbered for precise reconstruction, though the reassembly process took three decades to complete due to funding challenges. This meticulous approach makes the building a remarkable example of heritage restoration and reconstruction.
