Church of Santo Domingo, Ourense

The Church of Santo Domingo in Ourense is a parish building with a single nave and ribbed vaulting. The nave leads to a dome above the transept supported by scallop-shaped corbels.

The Dominican friars established this religious complex between 1643 and 1666 with support from Domingo Rodriguez de Araujo from Spanish America. The project arose during a period of strong economic activity and religious development in the region.

The interior displays multiple Baroque altarpieces created by Francisco de Castro Canseco with gilded and polychrome decorations from the 18th century. These ornaments reflect the wealth and artistic ambitions of the Dominican friars who managed this place.

The church maintains regular hours for worship and visits, with access through a granite staircase from Santo Domingo Street. Visitors should note that the steps are steep, and sturdy footwear is recommended.

The mother of General Jose de San Martin, a key figure in South American independence, was buried within this church. Her grave marks a connection between this Galician city and the major historical events of the New World.
