Church of Santa Eufemia, Ourense, Parish church in central Ourense, Spain
The Church of Santa Eufemia is a religious building in central Ourense with three longitudinal naves arranged in a Latin cross layout. The interior contains a large Baroque altar centered around a Cristo de la Esperanza sculpture.
Construction started in the mid-17th century as a Jesuit school church and became a parish church in 1767 after the Jesuits departed the area. This marked a turning point in its purpose and administration.
The granite facade displays Galician Baroque characteristics with curved lines and tall columns that define the regional style. Visitors notice these architectural details immediately when entering the square.
The church is located at Calle Lamas Carvajal 11 and ranks as the second largest religious structure in the city after the cathedral. Access is direct from the street, and the square in front helps with orientation when exploring the center.
The concave facade was designed specifically to adapt to the narrow street while maintaining strong visibility from different angles. The present-day Santa Eufemia Square actually developed after the church was built and significantly altered the original urban setting.
