Poblado minero de Las Menas, Mining settlement in Sierra de los Filabres, Spain.
Poblado minero de Las Menas is a historical mining settlement in the mountains near Serón, located on a steep hillside with preserved buildings from the mining era. The site includes worker housing, technician and management residences, plus industrial structures scattered across the uneven terrain.
The British company The Menas Mining Company established this iron mining operation in 1886 and ran it continuously until closure in 1968. The decades of operation shaped both the economic development of the region and the lives of multiple generations of mine workers.
The settlement shows the social structure of mining communities through separate housing areas for workers, technicians, and management staff. You can see this spatial division when walking through the different residential sections today.
The site is freely accessible throughout the year, allowing visitors to explore the remaining structures independently. Some buildings have been converted into a hotel and camping facilities, offering lodging options for extended stays.
At the height of operations, nearly 3000 workers made the daily journey through mountain paths from surrounding villages to reach the mines. These historical walking routes are still partially traceable today and reveal the daily effort required for this work.
