Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol
Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol, Gothic religious building in Plaza de San Andrés, Córdoba, Spain.
The Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol is a Gothic church located at Plaza de San Andrés in Córdoba, featuring a Renaissance brick tower and a Gothic main facade with rounded arches built in 1489. The main altar from 1753 sits at the heart of the worship space and reflects the artistic evolution within the building.
Construction began in 1246 following the Christian conquest, built over the remains of the ancient Basilica of San Zoilo which sat near the Roman Via Augusta. The building underwent significant changes over the centuries that shaped its present form and artistic character.
The church houses paintings from the Céspedes school, Antonio Monroy, and Antonio del Castillo that visitors can see displayed throughout the interior. Baroque sculptures created in Pedro Duque Cornejo's workshop add to the artistic richness found within.
The church is located centrally in the old city and easy to reach on foot, with clear markers on the plaza. Visiting hours vary seasonally, and you should plan accordingly, especially during peak times around religious holidays.
The church retains two original sections before the main apse, a feature that sets it apart from similar churches in the region. This distinctive layout creates a different spatial experience compared to other comparable buildings.
