Iglesia de Santa Marta

Iglesia de Santa Marta is a Gothic church with three naves distinguished by different structural solutions for each section. The central nave features a wooden ceiling, while the lateral spaces are covered with cross vaults.

Construction began in 1639 on a site with deep historical layers, as it once held a mosque. That mosque had itself been built atop the remains of a Roman temple, creating a succession of sacred buildings.

The church takes its name from Saint Martha, a biblical figure known for her hospitality and service. Today it functions as a central gathering place where locals and visitors alike experience the religious life of the community.

The church is located in the center of Martos, making it easy to find while exploring the town. Visitors should verify opening hours beforehand, as religious buildings often have limited access times during the day.

The bell tower was designed by architect Francisco del Castillo and stands out as a distinctive feature of Martos' skyline. Its three-section design culminates in a pointed spire that catches the eye from many angles around town.
