Bridge of la Tavirona, railroad bridge between Lepe and Cartaya
The Bridge of la Tavirona is an iron structure spanning the River Piedras that connects the towns of Lepe and Cartaya. Built in 1931, it stretches about 80 meters long and was constructed using leftover parts from old railway cars as part of a former rail line.
The bridge was built in 1931 as part of a railway line running from Gibraleón to Ayamonte through several towns. The railway ceased operations in 1987, after which the line was transformed in 1990 into a walking and cycling route called Vía Verde Litoral.
The bridge connects two neighboring towns and is named after a local area along the river. Today it serves as part of a walking and cycling route where both residents and visitors pass through regularly.
The bridge is easily accessed via small roads and paths from nearby towns and can be crossed on foot or by bicycle. The area is open and green with good conditions for walking and cycling.
The structure was built by Duro Felguera, a renowned manufacturer of metal structures, using recycled parts from old railway cars as building material. This innovative approach to reusing materials from the early 20th century shows how resources were conserved at that time.
