Gardenia Helsinki

Gardenia Helsinki is a glass building in Viikki with both indoor and outdoor garden spaces showcasing a mix of Finnish elements and Southeast Asian plants. The complex features water features made from natural stone, tropical fruit trees, spice plants, and medicinal herbs arranged throughout different sections.

The building opened in 2001 as a major project with design by architect Hannu Tikka and gardens created by Japanese landscape artist Kazuo Makioka. After sitting vacant for several years, it was converted into a brewery and restaurant in 2021.

The space once served as a learning hub where local schools brought students to explore plant diversity and understand the relationship between people and nature. Visitors could see how different species are used in daily life and traditional practices.

The location is easy to reach, as the building sits in the Viikki neighborhood accessible by public transport. Visitors should know that the space operates today as a restaurant and brewery, making it possible to visit year-round regardless of weather conditions.

The site once hosted a living research collection where tropical fruits, spices, and medicinal plants were grown for university study and experimentation. This hands-on connection with academic researchers set it apart from typical recreational gardens.
