Viikki Arboretum, Scientific arboretum in Viikki district, Helsinki, Finland
Viikki Arboretum is a research facility spanning 23 hectares (57 acres) and home to over 250 species of trees, shrubs, and woody vines. The grounds are divided into five geographic collections representing plants from different temperate regions across the world.
The University of Helsinki established this facility in 1969 as a research and educational project. Since its creation, the arboretum has been systematically developed and expanded with plants from various continents.
The arboretum offers visitors a direct encounter with trees and shrubs from different parts of the world, all arranged in distinct zones. Each section reveals how plants from specific regions have adapted to their native environments.
About 5 kilometers (3 miles) of marked trails wind through the grounds, making it easy to navigate different plant zones. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially in wet conditions.
The arboretum features specialized collections that group plant families such as conifers, roses, and willows according to scientific principles. This arrangement allows visitors to observe the differences and similarities between related species up close.
