Viikki research farm, farm in Helsinki, Finland
The Viikki research farm is an educational and experimental facility of the University of Helsinki located in the Viikki district of the city. It spreads across open fields for crop cultivation, grazing areas for cattle, and an arboretum containing hundreds of tree and shrub species.
The farm was founded more than 400 years ago and has served agricultural study and teaching ever since. Over the centuries it transformed from a simple working farm into a modern research center operated by the University.
The name Viikki comes from Finnish meaning "bay". Today the farm serves as a place where visitors witness research in action and understand how scientific work and traditional farming practices are connected.
A marked walking trail of about one kilometer guides visitors through the farm past fields, the cowshed, and the arboretum. The trail is suitable for all ages and visitors should remember this is an active working farm, so respecting local instructions is important.
The arboretum on the grounds contains hundreds of tree and shrub species from Finland and beyond in a quiet forest-like setting. This collection shows visitors plant diversity and the importance of trees in local and global ecosystems.
