Russarö Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Russarö Island, Hanko, Finland.
Russarö Lighthouse is an octagonal structure built from granite and brick, rising approximately 21 meters above Russarö Island near Hanko. Its distinctive red tower stands as a navigational marker visible from the sea, helping guide vessels through these waters.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1863 to replace earlier wooden daymarks that had stood on the island. It became the first Finnish lighthouse to operate continuously through the winter months, enabling year-round port activities.
Local seafarers refer to the lighthouse as the 'Eye of Hanko', recognizing its role as a guiding symbol in Finnish maritime navigation history. The red tower has become deeply embedded in the visual identity of the port community and the waters surrounding it.
Summer boat tours depart from Hanko Eastern Harbor and bring visitors to the island, though access to the interior remains restricted. It is best to check beforehand for current access conditions and timing before planning your visit.
Two rare sea cannons from the Bethlehem Steel Company, measuring 234 millimeters, sit on the island grounds as reminders of its past defensive role. These guns show that the station once served purposes beyond navigation, protecting the coast during earlier times.
