Hanko Church

Hanko Church is a red brick structure set on Vartiovuori mountain in this coastal town, blending Gothic Revival and functionalist design elements. The building combines these architectural styles in a way that feels both reverent and modern.

The church was designed in the 1890s by architects Jac Ahrenberg and Bertel Liljequist, reflecting the architectural vision of that era. A major renovation in the 1970s significantly altered its appearance when the exterior was refaced.

Inside, a statue of Christ created by the renowned sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen serves as the focal point of the altar for Lutheran worship. This religious artwork shapes the spiritual experience of those who enter the sanctuary.

The location is easily accessed from the elevated hillside and offers views over the town and the sea beyond. The best time to visit is during warmer months when services are held and the building is actively open.

The building stood on an elevated position and served sailors as a navigation landmark on Finland's southern coast for many years. Ships recognized the structure from the water and used it to help orient their course.
