Sapokka, Water garden in Kotka, Finland.
Sapokka is a water park in Kotka with multiple waterways, small ponds, and a 20-meter waterfall that creates a natural water circulation system throughout the grounds. The park offers various walking paths, seating areas, and viewpoints where visitors can enjoy seasonal flower displays throughout the year.
This park was created in the late 20th century through the transformation of a former sea bay under the direction of architect Heikki Laaksonen. The development of the site into a modern park began in 1990 and completely reshaped the landscape.
The park displays Finnish natural materials in its design, particularly through stones and rocks sourced from different regions of the country. Visitors can discover these geological features while walking and appreciate how the Finnish landscape is formed.
The park is easy to walk through with well-marked paths suitable for most visitors. There are multiple rest spots where you can pause and enjoy the surroundings at your own pace.
The park was honored in the 1990s for its innovative design and environmentally conscious approach to landscape architecture. The combination of water management and natural stone design was a relatively new approach to park-building at that time.
