Kotka Maretarium

Kotka Maretarium displays around 60 Finnish fish species in roughly 22 themed tanks filled with fresh and brackish water that mirror different local water habitats. The facility also offers a café, shop, and regular feeding programs for visitors to observe.

The facility was founded in 2002 through a partnership between the City of Kotka, the University of Helsinki, and the Game and Fisheries Research Institute. This collaboration created a center focused on studying and sharing knowledge about Finnish waters.

The facility focuses on teaching visitors about Finnish aquatic life through feeding demonstrations and films that highlight native water habitats. The way fish are displayed in different tank zones shows the contrast between freshwater and brackish conditions found across Finland.

The location is near the city center and is easily reached on foot or by local transport. Plan to spend about two to three hours to explore all the tanks and watch the feeding demonstrations without rushing.

The Baltic Sea tank holds 500,000 liters of water and features four viewing windows, one of which forms the wall of the maritime theater Meriteatteri. This large tank is a place where visitors often spend extended time watching and observing.
