Haukkavuori observation tower, Observation tower in Kotka, Finland.
Haukkavuori is an observation tower standing 72 meters high at the western edge of Kotkansaari island in Kotka. From the top, you can see across the Gulf of Finland and the scattered islands of the archipelago.
Construction started in 1914 in the Art Nouveau style but was interrupted by the Finnish Civil War. The tower was finally completed in 1920 after the conflict ended.
The interior now houses an art gallery displaying regional works and rotating exhibitions. Visitors can see how this space has become a center for local artistic expression and community engagement.
The observation deck is open to visitors during the summer season. There is a restaurant on the ground floor where you can get refreshments while enjoying your visit.
During World War II, the tower became an air observation post where women from the Lotta Svard organization watched for aircraft. This civilian monitoring role made it an important part of the local defense effort.
