Haukkavuori observation tower, Observation tower in Kotka, Finland.
Haukkavuori is an observation tower on the western edge of Kotkansaari island in Kotka, overlooking the Gulf of Finland and the surrounding archipelago. It stands on a rocky hill, rising well above the surrounding trees and giving a clear view in all directions.
Work on the tower began in 1914 in the Art Nouveau style, but the Finnish Civil War stopped construction before it could be finished. It was eventually completed in 1920, once the conflict had ended.
The interior now houses an art gallery displaying regional works and rotating exhibitions. Visitors can see how this space has become a center for local artistic expression and community engagement.
The tower is open to visitors during the summer season, and there is a restaurant on the ground floor where you can take a break. The path leading up to it goes through wooded terrain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
During the Second World War, the tower served as an air observation post, staffed by women from the Lotta Svärd organization who scanned the sky for aircraft. This gave an everyday landmark a direct role in wartime defense.
