Old Vaasa ruins, Church ruins in Vaasa, Finland
Old Vaasa ruins are the remaining stone walls of St. Maria Church, a medieval structure set within a grassy park area in northern Vaasa. The preserved walls show the original layout and construction style of the former place of worship.
The church was built gradually during the 1400s and 1500s to serve as the religious center of the city. A major fire in 1852 destroyed much of the original settlement, and the building was never reconstructed.
The site tells you how medieval people gathered and worshipped in this church. You can see where the altar stood and how the building served the community.
The site is located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from modern Vaasa's center and is easy to reach by local paths. Information panels on site explain the original structure and how the building once functioned.
These are the only surviving stone walls of a medieval church left in the Ostrobothnia region of western Finland. Many visitors miss the fact that this location marks exactly where the old city boundary was before the relocation.
