Monikonpuro, Stream in Leppävaara, Finland
Monikonpuro is a small stream that winds through the Espoo area, maintaining a width of roughly 1 to 2 meters throughout its course. It originates in the Rastaala area, flows through Leppävaara, and eventually empties into Laajalahti Lake.
Fish populations were introduced into the stream in 1994 through restoration efforts aimed at supporting local aquatic life. A major relocation project in 2001 shifted the waterway by approximately one kilometer to make room for urban development.
Local residents and environmental groups care for this waterway as a green corridor, organizing regular cleanup activities and nature observation walks. The stream's name reflects its long connection to the community that has lived alongside it for generations.
The stream is easily accessible from Leppävaara Park and follows established pathways open to pedestrians and cyclists. Water levels rise noticeably after heavy rainfall, so conditions can change depending on the weather.
Though it appears as a calm waterway today, this stream underwent a dramatic transformation in 2001 when it was entirely relocated to a new location. This shift made room for one of the region's largest shopping centers while the stream retained its role in supporting local wildlife.
