Kirsikkapuisto, Cherry park in Roihuvuori district, Finland.
Kirsikkapuisto is a park in Roihuvuori with over 150 pink cherry trees arranged along winding paths on a sunny hillside with views of the Roihuvuori water tower. The space includes wooden benches, picnic areas, and a commemorative plaque that lists the names of tree donors.
The park was initiated by entrepreneur Norio Tomida in 2005, with the first cherry trees planted on World Environment Day in 2007. This project established a new tradition connecting Finland's capital with Japanese garden culture.
The park hosts the northernmost Hanami festival, where Finnish and Japanese communities gather each spring to celebrate cherry blossoms together. This event has made the place a bridge between two cultures during the blooming season.
The park is located at the intersection of Sahaajankatu and Abraham Wetterintie, making it easy to reach and well served by walking paths. Spring is the ideal time to visit when the cherry trees are in full bloom and resting at the benches becomes especially enjoyable.
Each year, residents plant an additional cherry tree to honor the selected citizen of the year, creating a living monument to community values. This ritual means the park grows year by year and carries the stories of those it celebrates.
