Maamerkki, Residential high-rise in Itäkeskus, Helsinki, Finland.
Maamerkki is a high-rise residential building in Itäkeskus standing 82 meters tall across 19 floors, featuring a glass-enclosed staircase running the full length of its concrete and cement clinker facade. The structure contains more than 50 apartments and multiple business spaces, with a viewing terrace on the top floor.
The building was completed in 1987 from a design by architect Erkki Kairamo and held the position of Helsinki's tallest structure until 2006. After that year, taller buildings reshaped the city's skyline.
The name emerged from an architectural competition held by Haka in 1977, though the building was later renamed. It has become a recognizable landmark in the eastern part of the city that shapes how residents experience this neighborhood.
The building is easily accessible, and visitors can reach the top-floor viewing terrace to see the city from above. It is recommended to check current access conditions before visiting to confirm opening hours.
The glass staircase integrates air conditioning channels, which shows thoughtful engineering that serves both function and visual appeal. At night, the illuminated stairs create a striking effect against the sky that makes the building stand out in the city.
