Maksniemi, Harbor village in Simo, Finland
Maksniemi is a fishing harbor village at the mouth of the Simo River equipped with guest berths, fish handling areas, and a boat ramp. The village has closed docks with visitor slips and operates at water depths of less than 2 meters at mean low water.
The settlement began with five houses in 1540 and grew after a road connection was established in 1652, bringing wagon traffic to the area. The village was substantially rebuilt after 1944 when wartime destruction damaged key infrastructure.
The village is rooted in local fishing traditions tied to the salmon populations native to the Baltic Sea waters that flow through this region.
The harbor is easily accessed from land and offers facilities including ice machines, waste disposal, and basic amenities for visitors. The shallow water depth means smaller and medium-sized boats can access the site comfortably.
The village is closely tied to regional salmon fishing, as native Baltic salmon migrate upriver seasonally to spawn in these waters. Visitors often see fishing boats at work and can observe the rhythm of local catch activities throughout the year.
