Hangastenmäen linnavuori, Medieval hillfort in Janakkala, Finland.
Hangastenmäen linnavuori is a medieval fortress built on a high rectangular plateau in Janakkala, Finland. The site overlooks Kernaalanjärvi lake and features stone walls that are roughly 2.5 meters thick throughout the fortified area.
This fortress was built in the late 1200s and remained in use through the 1300s as a military stronghold. Its location remained unknown until metal detection work in 2013 brought the site to modern attention.
Archaeological excavations revealed silver-plated spearheads, sword pommels, armor arrow tips, horseshoes, and torch holders, indicating military and equestrian activities.
The site has no marked trails or information signs, so visitors need to navigate across natural terrain and uneven ground on their own. Expect to encounter rugged conditions and bring appropriate footwear, as the high elevation can be windy.
Researchers found traces of a possible gate and a blacksmith workshop with iron slag between the stone formations at the northeastern wall. These discoveries suggest the site served both military and craft production purposes during its occupation.
