Amos Rex, Underground art gallery at Lasipalatsi Square, Helsinki, Finland
Amos Rex is an art museum situated beneath Lasipalatsi Square, connected to the surface through walkable domes with large circular windows. The underground space offers spacious galleries and uses natural light from the skylights to create a distinctive exhibition environment.
The museum opened in 2018 as a successor to the former Amos Anderson Art Museum that previously occupied this location. The transformation into an underground gallery marked a new direction for Helsinki's art institution.
The gallery presents contemporary artworks and historical exhibitions that rotate throughout the year. Visitors experience a mix of modern installations and curated collections that are regularly rearranged to offer fresh perspectives.
The museum is centrally located on Lasipalatsi Square and easy to find since the round domes are visible on the surface. Access is provided via stairs or elevators that descend from the plaza level.
The dome skylights function as part of the public plaza while simultaneously serving as outdoor art installations. When standing on Lasipalatsi Square at night, the illuminated domes become part of the city's nightscape.
