Kamppi Chapel, Lutheran chapel at Narinkka Square, Helsinki, Finland.
Kamppi Chapel is a wooden structure at Narinkka Square with curved walls forming a cylindrical shape that rises to about 11.5 meters high. Large glass openings on the sides frame views of the plaza while allowing daylight to filter inside, and the wood construction creates a warm interior atmosphere.
The structure was built in 2012 as part of Helsinki's World Design Capital initiative, introducing an innovative timber construction approach. It quickly became a well-visited destination, drawing many visitors during its first year of operation.
The chapel welcomes people looking for a moment of calm in the middle of the shopping district, whether they come for prayer or just to pause. It serves as a gathering place where locals and travelers find a quieter space within the bustling commercial area.
The chapel sits right at the entrance of Kamppi shopping center, making it easy to spot when you arrive at the square. You can step inside freely at any time when it is open without needing to register or arrange anything in advance.
The spruce wood was treated with a special nanotech coating that protects it while keeping it transparent so you can see the grain. This treatment allows the walls to remain durable over time while maintaining their distinctive timber appearance.
