Helsinki main post office, Post office building in Kluuvi, Helsinki, Finland.
The Helsinki main post office stands as a functionalist architectural structure completed in 1938, featuring yellow Kupittaa clinker brick facades arranged in a postage stamp pattern with reinforced concrete and brick construction materials throughout its design.
Originally constructed between 1935 and 1938 by architects Jorma Järvi, Erik Lindroos, and Kaarlo Borg, the building replaced facilities damaged by a nearby gas facility chimney explosion and housed 208 rooms for mail handling operations until services relocated to Pasila in 1978.
The building showcases interior design elements created by prominent Finnish designers including Arttu Brummer, Runar Engblom, Birger Hahl, and Paavo Tynell, while featuring a sculptural female figure by Kalervo Kallio in the main hall that emphasizes Finnish craftsmanship traditions.
Located at Mannerheiminaukio 1 with postal code 00100, the building remains accessible by public transport through several bus and tram lines, continuing to provide postal services while housing Library 10 music and IT studio facilities since 2005.
During the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, a heliport was constructed on the building's roof to facilitate transportation needs, making it one of the few post office buildings worldwide to have served as a temporary aviation facility.
