VR warehouses, Railway warehouses in Kluuvi district, Finland.
VR warehouses are industrial buildings in the Kluuvi district near Helsinki Central Station, constructed with red brick and featuring strong horizontal lines throughout their facades. Multiple loading bays punctuate the sides where railway connections once facilitated cargo operations.
Architect Bruno Granholm designed these railway warehouses in 1899 as part of the Töölö freight yard serving Finnish State Railways operations. The buildings functioned as cargo hubs for over eight decades before their use gradually declined.
The warehouses transformed from industrial spaces into venues for music festivals and public gatherings during the 1980s and early 2000s.
The site sits directly adjacent to the main railway station and is easily walkable from downtown Helsinki. Access to this area is straightforward from public transport connections that serve the station.
A fire in May 2006 caused major damage to these structures, and despite preservation efforts, they were fully demolished by 2018. Historical photographs remain the primary way to see what once stood in this railway district location.
