Samppalinna Park, Historical park in III District, Finland
Samppalinna Park is a large hillside park with over 80 tree species such as linden, elm, and maple spread across multiple terraces. Sports facilities and utility connections at the sports field support various outdoor activities and events.
Development of the site began in the 1860s when a local official commissioned a restaurant on the northern slope, designed by a Swedish architect. The hillside was gradually transformed into a public space over subsequent decades.
The park serves as a gathering place for outdoor concerts and festivals, where visitors enjoy performances under mature trees. Events here have become part of how the community celebrates together throughout the year.
The park is accessible on foot with good views from different levels across the city and surroundings. Visitors should note the terrain changes significantly and sturdy shoes are helpful for comfortable walking.
A radio station operated from the southwestern corner in 1927, years before broadcasting became widespread. Few visitors realize this hillside hosted early radio technology in its experimental phase.
