Hörtsänä Arboretum, Botanical garden in Onnistaipale, Orivesi, Finland.
Hörtsänä Arboretum spans wooded areas and cultivated gardens, featuring hundreds of tree species from different continents alongside flowering plants, walking paths, and historic stone structures within its protected natural setting.
Founded in 1909 by landowner Hugo Hörtsänä, the arboretum was designed to test exotic tree species' adaptability to northern Finnish climate conditions and became one of Finland's three most important arboreta during the 1920s and 1930s.
The arboretum represents Finnish dedication to botanical experimentation and environmental stewardship, relying on volunteer restoration efforts and community involvement to maintain its educational mission and preserve its century-old plant collection heritage.
Visitors can access the site year-round with free entry via Onnisjärventie road from Orivesi center, with facilities including parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and marked trails suitable for most mobility levels throughout the grounds.
The site features mysterious remnants including an old bell tower, stone circle called Isännänkivi, weathered pavilion named Laululava, and underground potato cellar now inhabited by a family of badgers.
