Orivesi, town in the region of Pirkanmaa in Finland
Orivesi is a small town in the Pirkanmaa region surrounded by over 350 lakes and forests. The landscape sits between 100 and 150 meters above sea level, with Lake Längelmävesi as its centerpiece, offering numerous islands and quiet spots along the water.
The town was founded in 1869 and received city status in 1986 after operating as a municipality for many years. A major economic turning point came with the opening of a gold mine in 1990, which has since produced over 15 tons of gold.
The name Orivesi means "stallion water" in Finnish, reflecting a long tradition of naming lakes and water places after familiar words. Woolen socks are woven into daily life here, especially during colder months, and serve as a symbol of comfort and the town's relaxed approach to living.
The town is easily reached from Tampere, about 40 minutes away by train, with the nearest airport serving regional flights. Marked hiking and biking trails around the lakes allow visitors to explore the quiet forests and waters at their own pace.
In 2021, Orivesi was named the capital of woolen socks in Finland, an honor celebrating the town's connection to hand-knit woolen socks. Each year, the Woolsock Run Finnish Championships take place here, drawing participants from across the country to race through snowy forests.
