Saignon, Medieval village in Vaucluse, France

Saignon is a village in Vaucluse positioned on a hilltop near Apt and shaped by a prominent rock formation. It sits at roughly 450 meters elevation, with a 30-meter rock face that defines and overlooks the settlement.

Three fortified structures were built on the rock during the Middle Ages to defend the nearby town of Apt. These strongholds reflect the strategic importance of the location during this period.

The church at the center reflects its past as a stopping point for pilgrims traveling between Rome and Santiago de Compostela. This spiritual role is visible today in how the building anchors village life and carries the memory of centuries of passing travelers.

The village is reachable from Apt and works well for visitors who want to explore its medieval layout and natural surroundings. The elevated position offers views across the surrounding landscape and allows for walking around the rock formation.

The area produces truffles, lavender honey, and goat cheese that play a key role in local Provençal food. Visitors can discover these products directly in the villages and understand the farming traditions that have shaped the region for generations.
