Gérardmer, Mountain resort in Vosges, France
Gérardmer is a mountain town in the Vosges located on the western shore of an alpine lake. The settlement sits at an altitude of around 2,200 feet (670 meters) and is surrounded by dense forests and wooded hillsides.
In the 11th century, Duke Gerard of Lorraine built a defensive structure by the lake, which gave the area its name. Later, toward the end of the 13th century, families from the surrounding countryside migrated here and established a permanent settlement.
The town takes its name from Gerard, Duke of Lorraine, who built a defensive structure by the lake in the 11th century. Local communities continue to maintain ties with the natural surroundings and uphold traditional crafts including woodworking and textile production.
Most areas of the town are accessible by hiking trails and pathways that lead through forests and valleys. In summer, visitors can walk around the lake or swim, while proximity to ski runs nearby makes winter sports possible.
The Saut des Cuves waterfall forms striking pools and cascades between smooth rock cliffs along the river. The water drops through narrow gorges with distinctive rock formations that shape the landscape of the area.
