Saut des Cuves

Saut des Cuves is a series of cascading waterfalls along the Vologne River in the Vosges Mountains, where water flows over granite rocks in successive drops. The waterfalls lie in a wooded valley setting and create a natural focal point along the river's path through the region.

The area attracted human activity for centuries due to its water source and useful location in the landscape. A stone bridge called Pont des Fées near the falls was rebuilt in 1782 and represents one of the region's historical structures.

Local residents historically used this location as a strategic point for monitoring livestock movements and securing water supplies from the Vologne River.

The site can be reached via the D417 road between Gerardmer and Xonrupt-Longemer, with free parking available nearby. Visiting after rainfall offers the best views, as higher water volume creates a more dramatic display.

Over centuries, the flowing water has carved deep basin-shaped hollows into the granite rocks, which gave the falls their distinctive name. These natural stone basins remain clearly visible and show how persistent water shapes even the hardest rock.
