Peyrehorade, commune in Landes, France
Peyrehorade is a small town in southwestern France situated between two rivers called the Gaves and near a hill called Aspremont in the Landes region. The town features a medieval structure centered around Saint-Martin Church, the Château d'Orthe fortress beside the river, and streets organized around the market square and riverside paths.
The town developed in the Middle Ages as a trading hub at the crossroads of several regions and received authorization for its weekly market in 1358. The Château d'Orthe was built in the 15th century, and in the 17th century a Jewish community settled there before fleeing during the Inquisition, leaving behind three cemeteries still visible today.
The weekly market on Place Aristide Briand remains the center of community life, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays with locals buying fresh produce and local goods. This gathering place reflects the long tradition of exchange that has defined the town since medieval times.
The Château d'Orthe and Saint-Martin Church are located in the town center where the weekly market also takes place, allowing for easy exploration of main points. The Roc waterfront offers riverside walks with views of the town, and several cycling and hiking routes connect to nearby lakes and villages.
The Maison du Saumon tells the story of wild salmon that swim in the nearby Gave and Adour rivers and have been part of local tradition for generations. A geocaching course called Terra Aventura Peyrehorade Ki offers a fun way to explore the town by searching for small treasures using a phone or GPS device.
