Cimetière du Vieux Château, Historic cemetery with Orthodox chapel in the old town, Menton, France.
The Vieux Château Cemetery extends across terraced slopes above Menton, providing views over the old port and Garavan bay with its historic graves and Russian Orthodox chapel featuring distinctive architecture and memorial monuments.
The site was established in the early nineteenth century on the grounds of a former Grimaldi fortress built in 1249, gradually developing into a cemetery between 1875 and 1902 following the prohibition of church burials.
The Russian section reflects the presence of Russian aristocracy who wintered in Menton between 1840 and 1850, featuring a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows with an Orthodox dome designed by architect Sylvain Jauffret.
The cemetery is open daily from 07:00 to 17:00 and is located on Montée du Souvenir, accessible from the historic center of Menton with parking facilities available in the surrounding area.
The Russian Orthodox chapel was designated a historic monument in 2022 and contains graves of aristocratic Russian families including the Trubetskoy lineage, as well as the tomb of Admiral Grigorovich, the last naval minister of Imperial Russia.
