Kergüntuil gallery grave, Neolithic gallery grave in Trégastel, France
Kergüntuil is a Neolithic gallery grave located in Trégastel on the Breton coast. The rectangular stone chamber runs about 9 meters long and holds a large stone structure at its center.
The grave was built during the Neolithic period and served as a burial site for many generations. Excavations in the 1930s uncovered burial urns, polished stone tools, and pottery dating to around 2000 BCE.
Carved symbols on the chamber walls show female figures with necklaces, reflecting beliefs in fertility deities during the Neolithic period. These images reveal what mattered to the people who built this burial place thousands of years ago.
The grave sits along the Circuit VTT des mégalithes trail, where visitors can explore multiple ancient stone structures in the area. Access is open year-round, though sturdy footwear is helpful as the ground can be uneven and overgrown.
The entrance has a distinctive gap created by the intentional removal of one original support stone. This feature suggests the ancient builders made changes to the structure after its initial construction.
