Planche des Belles Filles

The Planche des Belles Filles reaches an elevation of 1,148 meters and presents steep gradients reaching up to 28 percent on its final section.

The mountain's original name derives from the 16th century term 'belles fahys', referring to the numerous beech trees that covered the area at that time.

Local folklore tells of young women who jumped from the mountain during the Thirty Years' War, with a wooden statue now marking their memory.

The ascent from Plancher-les-Mines extends 5.9 kilometers with an average gradient of 8.5 percent, including six hairpin turns along the route.

The Tour de France introduced a gravel section at the summit in 2019, extending the climb by one kilometer and adding technical difficulty to the ascent.
