The Réserve naturelle nationale des Ballons comtois is a protected nature reserve in the southern Vosges Mountains with two mountain chains separated by the Rahin Valley. Mixed forests of beech and spruce trees cover the terrain across approximately 2,259 hectares.
The area was shaped by mining and resource extraction during the Middle Ages, which altered the original landscape. These industrial activities left traces that still influence the terrain today.
Traditional forestry and grazing continue to shape the landscape here, reflecting how local communities have worked with this land for centuries. Visitors can observe these practices integrated with conservation efforts.
Marked hiking trails guide visitors through the area, though visitor facilities remain minimal by design. This approach helps protect habitats and keeps the experience close to nature.
The reserve contains numerous peat bogs formed by historical peat extraction activities. These wetlands now host rare plants and specialized ecosystems found nowhere else in the region.
