Ouvrage Michelsberg, Military fortress of the Maginot Line in Ébersviller, France
Ouvrage Michelsberg is a fortification on the Maginot Line that extends roughly 30 meters below ground with interconnected galleries and a working rail system for transport. The structure includes multiple chambers for different military functions, ventilation systems, and water supply infrastructure.
Built between 1930 and 1935, this fortification was part of France's defensive strategy against potential invasion. The garrison defended the position against German attacks in 1940 before surrendering later that summer.
This place reflects how French military planners thought about defense in the early 20th century, with spaces designed for soldiers to live and work underground for extended periods. Visitors can walk through sleeping quarters, kitchens, and command centers that show the routines of those stationed here.
Wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes when exploring the underground chambers, which stay cold year-round. A flashlight is helpful for navigating the dark passages and stairs throughout the site.
The fort still contains its original power plant with working diesel engines that once supplied electricity to the complex. An enormous combat turret weighing 265 tons demonstrates the scale of weaponry that was housed inside.
