Ouvrage Anzeling

Ouvrage Anzeling is an underground fortress near Piblange that consists of several separate combat blocks linked together by tunnels running beneath the ground. This stronghold was built in the 1930s as part of a network of fortifications meant to defend a strategic border area.

This stronghold was built between 1930 and 1940 as one of many defensive works that France constructed to protect its borders. It reflects the military thinking of that era, when underground and fortified positions were seen as the most effective defense strategy.

The facility represents French military engineering from the interwar period, demonstrating the nation's approach to territorial defense through fixed fortifications.

The site requires careful exploration as the underground rooms and passages do not follow a straightforward layout and can be confusing to navigate. Visitors should prepare for narrow spaces and may find a flashlight helpful when moving through the darker sections of the facility.

Inside this underground structure, an innovative railway system was built to automatically move ammunition and supplies between the different combat blocks. This ingenious transport method allowed defenders to keep their positions stocked without exposing themselves to the outside.
