Église Saint-Hymetière, Romanesque church in Saint-Hymetière-sur-Valouse, France

Église Saint-Hymetière is a church with Romanesque design features located at an elevation of about 440 meters near the Valouse valley. The building combines elements from its original 11th-century structure with modifications made in the 1600s, set within a mountainous landscape.

The original sanctuary was built in the 11th century and underwent extensive reconstruction in 1634. This rebuilding preserved the classical Romanesque characteristics while incorporating new architectural elements.

The church takes its name from Saint Hymeretius, whose remains have been venerated in a shrine near the main altar since the 17th century. This location holds meaning for those interested in local religious traditions and the saint's enduring presence in the community.

The site is located in a mountainous region and is best approached on foot once you reach the immediate surroundings. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended because the terrain is hilly and the church sits at an elevated position.

Archaeological digs conducted in 1986 and 2010 uncovered around thirty burial sites spanning from the 6th century through the Medieval period in the surrounding grounds. These discoveries reveal that the location served as a burial ground of importance for over a thousand years.
