Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde

Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde, Medieval castle in Simiane-la-Rotonde, France

Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde is a castle in Provence featuring a distinctive round tower rising about 18 meters (59 feet) high with twelve stone arches arranged in a circular pattern. The tower has a domed ceiling with twelve ribbed vaults, creating a remarkable interior space.

The site first appeared in written records in 1031 as a fortified stronghold. It later became the residence of the Agoult-Simiane family until the French Revolution transformed its status.

The castle has been a gathering place for poets and musicians for centuries, and this artistic tradition continues today through regular concerts held within its walls. Visitors can stand in the same rooms where medieval singers once performed.

The castle is easy to reach and has several rooms open to the public, with seasonal exhibitions on display during warmer months. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the terrain is uneven and involves climbing stairs.

The tower's interior dome was constructed with twelve ribbed vaults, a rare feature in Romanesque architecture of this region. This technical solution reflects the skilled craftsmanship of its builders.
