Rochereil, Prehistoric cave in Grand-Brassac, Dordogne, France

Rochereil is a cave along the Dronne River in the Dordogne that opens about 20 meters above the water level into a limestone cliff. Its interior contains several natural chambers that accumulated deposits and remains across long periods.

The cave was first explored around 1900 and later underwent systematic excavation from 1935 to 1939. These investigations revealed evidence of repeated human activity during prehistoric times.

Researchers discovered 4000 stone and bone artifacts, including tools, weapons, and decorated objects from Magdalenian and Azilian periods.

The cave entrance sits several meters above river level and is accessed via a small road leading to nearby hamlets. The setting is fairly remote and should be explored carefully without expert guidance.

Excavations revealed skeletal remains of several individuals, including an adult burial and a child with a perforated skull. These human remains suggest the cave served as a burial site across multiple generations.
