Blockhaus DY10, Military bunker on Île de Nantes, France
Blockhaus DY10 is a bunker on Île de Nantes with two identical sections containing multiple rooms, located at Boulevard Léon-Bureau between Allee Assia-Djebar and Rue La Noue-Bras-de-Fer. The structure features the heavy concrete construction typical of German wartime shelters, with a rooftop space now in use for community projects.
German forces built this bunker between 1943 and 1944 to protect military personnel and shipyard workers during heavy aerial bombing campaigns. The shelter was constructed in response to the devastating air raids that struck Nantes throughout the conflict.
The structure transitioned from military use to serving the local community as a gathering place for music and student events. It represents how this neighborhood reinvented itself by giving new purpose to wartime remains.
You can reach the bunker by Tramway line 1 from Chantiers Navals station or by buses serving Gare de l'État and Prairie au Duc stations. The neighborhood is active and accessible, making it easy to combine a visit with exploring the surrounding area.
The rooftop has been transformed into an urban garden where visitors can discover community beekeeping activities and organic plantings. This green space on a wartime shelter demonstrates how local residents have converted concrete remains into habitat for pollinators and food production.
