Gorges du Pont du Diable, Natural gorge and geological formation in La Vernaz, France.
Gorges du Pont du Diable is a limestone canyon with a series of elevated walkways that allow visitors to observe the Dranse River flowing far below. The system extends through multiple levels and offers several viewpoints across the river landscape.
The canyon formed roughly 10,000 years ago through glacial activity and water erosion that carved through the limestone barriers of the Rochers de la Garde. This natural reshaping created the deep river channel and the rock walls seen today.
The name Pont du Diable comes from local legends about a natural stone arch spanning the deep river canyon. Visitors can see this distinctive rock formation while walking through the gorge.
Access requires descending stairs anchored in the rock that lead down several levels. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be cautious on slippery or wet surfaces, particularly near the walkways close to the river.
A glass walkway extends roughly 60 meters above the river and offers an unusual view straight down. This construction allows visitors to watch the water current and rock layers directly beneath their feet.
