Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris, Regional hospital network in Paris, France
Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris is a network of about 38 teaching hospitals covering the Île-de-France region and directed by a central administration along the Seine. The system is divided into six university hospital groups that offer various medical specialties across different locations.
The network was founded in Year 9 of the Revolutionary calendar as successor to a hospital council established by Cardinal Richelieu centuries earlier. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it grew into a leading institution for public healthcare across Europe.
The name reflects the public nature of the healthcare system and its role as an institution serving the community. Individual hospitals maintain their own identity while operating under a shared administrative framework.
The central administration along the riverbank oversees facilities in Paris and surrounding municipalities. Since each hospital has different specialties, visitors should check which facility they need and where it is located before making the trip.
The system intentionally distributes medical specialties across separate locations to provide focused care. This structure gives patients access to highly trained specialists and advanced facilities without having to travel long distances.
