Basilique Saint-Just de Valcabrère

Basilique Saint-Just de Valcabrère is a Romanesque church built in stone with a total length of 29 meters. The interior is structured around a central apse with two smaller radiating chapels.

Construction began in the 11th century using stone from the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum Convenarum that once stood nearby. The building received its consecration in 1200.

The entrance portal displays Christ surrounded by the four evangelists, and visitors can see decorative elements that have shaped how people approach this place over centuries. These images remain central to how the building is experienced today.

The location lies roughly 17 kilometers southwest of Saint-Gaudens in a quiet rural setting. Note that this site is part of several pilgrimage routes, so certain times may attract more visitors.

The building incorporates many Roman sculptures and architectural pieces that were repurposed from the ancient settlement nearby. Walking around, visitors can spot these reused columns and carved capitals worked into the walls.
