Basilique Sainte-Clotilde de Reims, Minor basilica in Reims, France
The Basilique Sainte-Clotilde is a Neo-Byzantine church with a Greek cross layout and central dome. The structure combines Byzantine features with architectural elements reminiscent of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Architect Alphonse Gosset built the church between 1896 and 1905 to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of King Clovis's baptism. This construction project honored a pivotal moment in French history.
The basilica holds a significant collection of relics from French saints stored in its underground crypt. Visitors can explore this spiritual collection, which reflects the religious heritage of the region.
The church is typically open on Sunday afternoons in July and August, as well as during Heritage Days events. It is advisable to check opening times in advance to plan a successful visit.
A roof fire in 2012 damaged a large section of the structure during maintenance work. The subsequent restoration completed in 2016 modernized key technical aspects of the building.
